How To Make Your Deck Child-Friendly

You might love the idea of spending time with your family on the deck. This can be a great way for everyone to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors, and it can also help you keep the mess outside. One thing that you might be worried about, however, is your children getting hurt while on your deck. Luckily, following these tips can help:

1. Install a Deck Railing

If your deck does not currently have a railing around it, it's a good idea to look into installing one. It can be tempting for small children to want to jump off of the deck while playing, or a small child could accidentally fall. By putting a railing around the entire deck, however, you can help prevent this from happening; just make sure that the slats are close enough together that your child can't easily slip between them. It's also important to put a railing on the steps so that your children can hold onto it for support when walking up and down the stairs.

2. Put Up a Gate

You might be worried about being able to keep an eye on your kids while you're grilling out or otherwise spending time on your deck. One good option to help keep them restricted to the deck area only is to put up a gate at the top of the steps. Then, your kids won't be able to easily get off of the deck, so you can breathe a little more easily. This can help prevent them from getting hurt in the yard or getting into the road.

3. Keep it Clean

Limbs, leaves and more can all fall on your deck. Wet leaves can be slippery, and limbs and other debris can make it easy for children (or adults) to slip and fall. Making sure that you regularly sweep your deck to get rid of debris can help prevent your kids -- as well as you and any other adults -- from slipping or tripping and falling.

4. Be Careful About the Placement of Furniture

It can be easy for small children to climb on patio furniture, which could make it possible for them to climb over your deck. Making sure that you keep your patio furniture away from the edges of the deck can help prevent something like this from happening, however.

Making your deck child-friendly is probably important to you. Luckily, if you follow these tips, you can help ensure that your outdoor living space is safe for everyone in your family.
